The first phase of the Tobacco-Free Campaign was successfully held on 26th October 2023 at the Kevilhouü Rio Auditorium, G. Rio School, Kohima, with a focus on raising awareness among students about the harmful effects of tobacco use.
The event was led by Mrs. Khrienuo Moa, President of RMLCF, and featured a presentation by Dr. Keduovinuo Keditsu, MS MRCS MCh, Consultant Cancer Surgeon at Putuonuo Hospital, Kohima. Dr. Keditsu highlighted the severe health risks associated with tobacco consumption.
Participants also engaged in group discussions, exploring various strategies to combat tobacco use and promote a healthier, tobacco-free environment.
Formation of Tobacco-Free Clubs: Teachers and students will collaborate to establish dedicated Tobacco-Free Clubs within their respective schools.
Inclusive Membership: Club memberships will be open to students from grades 6 to 12, ensuring a board representation and participation. Implement a mentoring system within the club, where older students mentor and guide younger members, creating a sense of responsibility and shared learning.
Leadership Roles: The appointment of a Club Leader-in-Charge, in collaboration with a teacher-in-Charge, will ensure the efficient and effective operation of the club.
Peer Support for Tobacco Users: Club members, particularly students, will offer support and assistance to fellow students who are tobacco users, aiming to promote a tobacco-free lifestyle.
School Policy Advocacy: Encourage the club to advocate for and contribute to the development or enhancement of school policies related to tobacco use.
Routine Checking: The club can conduct surprise inspections periodically to ensure compliance with tobacco-free policies within the school premises.
Collaborative Support: RMLCF is committed to extending its support when schools organize tobacco-free initiatives through the clubs, facilitating a synergistic approach to these activities.
Progress Updates: Continuous updates on the progress and achievements of the clubs will be shared through Tobacco-Free WhatsApp group, fostering collaboration and recognition.
Community Engagement: Club members will engage with nearby shops and establishments surrounding the school to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use.
Information Hub: A designated notice board will be set up within the school, serving as an information hub where educational posters and materials will be displayed to increase awareness.
Observing World No-Tobacco Day: Clubs will actively observe and participate in World No-Tobacco Day on May 31st to emphasize the importance of a tobacco-free lifestyle.
Recognition: Insights gained from the RMLCF Tobacco-free Campaign 2023 can be presented in school assemblies and pictures/videos of different activities can be shared in the Tobacco-Free WhatsApp group. Exceptional presentations may be recognized and awarded as “Change Makers” by RMLCF
